Last week, students from the J. Whitney Bunting College of Business & Technology (Georgia College & State University) visited the Department of Information Systems at the University of Münster to take part in the second part of the international Design Thinking seminar.

This time, the focus was on a real-world challenge: supporting the further development of the sustainability initiatives at viadee Unternehmensberatung AG. Special thanks go to viadee – in particular to Dr. Nicolas Pflanzl, Christian Schulze Dieckhoff, and Dr. Hendrik Winkelmann – for designing the case study and for their dedicated support throughout the seminar.

The participating students presented their innovative solution ideas directly on site at viadee. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive and highlighted the value of students’ perspectives and creative approaches in addressing real business challenges.

Beyond the academic work, the seminar also offered numerous opportunities for intercultural exchange – including joint activities, shared meals, and watching the German Cup final together. The event once again demonstrated the importance of international collaboration in higher education – both in terms of academic content and personal exchange between students and faculty from different cultural backgrounds.

In part 17 of the Alumni Stories, we learn more about Sebastian Weber, Chief Information Officer (CIO) at E.ON. He takes us through his career journey after completing his Information Systems studies at the University of Münster—a path from being a freelance software engineer to being named CIO of the Year in the "Large Enterprises" category in the fall of 2024. Additionally, Mr. Weber shares what particularly influenced him during his time in Münster.

AlumniUM hat es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, die Wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Fakultät nachhaltig zu unterstützen. Daher wurde 2007 die Initiative „ProCampus“ ins Leben gerufen. Ihr Ziel ist es, Ideen und Projekte zu fördern, die die Studienbedingungen an der Fakultät weiter verbessern sollen. Im Rahmen der neunten ProCampus Initiative schreibt AlumniUM für das Jahr 2025 erneut den Betrag von 15.000 EUR aus. Damit sollen solche Projekte gefördert werden, die sich durch eine angemessene Breitenwirkung sowie Nachhaltigkeit auszeichnen. Förderungswürdig sind ebenfalls kleinere Teilprojekte. Ihre Umsetzung soll einen klaren Nutzen für die gesamte Wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Fakultät erzeugen.

At the end of May, the Advisory Board of the School of Business and Economics met at the REACH Euregio Start-up Centre. The meeting focused on an exchange about current developments and the future strategic direction of the School. The Advisory Board is made up of renowned representatives from business and politics who see themselves as an advisory body and facilitate a structured dialogue between the School, business and politics.

Ende Mai kam das Advisory Board der Wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Fakultät in den Räumlichkeiten des REACH Euregio Start-up Centers zusammen. Im Zentrum des Treffens stand der Austausch über aktuelle Entwicklungen und die zukünftige strategische Ausrichtungen der Fakultät. Das Advisory Board setzt sich aus renommierten Vertreter:innen aus Wirtschaft und Politik zusammen, die sich als beratendes Gremium verstehen und als Beirat einen strukturierten Dialog zwischen Fakultät, WIrtschaft und Politik ermöglichen.

The School of Business and Economics at the University of Münster has officially appointed Prof Isabel Ramos as a ‘Visiting International Professor’ (VIP). As part of the VIP programme, which promotes international academic exchange, she was presented with a certificate of appointment by the Dean of the School, Prof. Dr Thomas Langer.  Isabel Ramos is a professor at the University of Minho in Portugal and an internationally recognised expert in the field of business informatics. She gave the bachelor's seminar ‘AI and Attention in the Organisation’ at the Institute of Information Systems in the summer semester.

Die Wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Fakultät der Universität Münster hat Prof. Isabel Ramos offiziell zur „Visiting International Professor“ (VIP) ernannt. Im Rahmen des VIP-Programms, das den internationalen wissenschaftlichen Austausch fördert, wurde ihr durch den Dekan der Fakultät, Prof. Dr. Thomas Langer, eine Ernennungsurkunde überreicht. Isabel Ramos ist Professorin an der Universität Minho in Portugal und eine international anerkannte Expertin im Bereich Wirtschaftsinformatik. Sie hat im Sommersemester das Bachelorseminar “AI and Attention in the Organization” am Institut für Wirtschaftsinformatik gegeben.

From May 16 to 18, 2025, the first Transdev Mobility Hackathon took place at the Leonardo campus of the University of Münster. The event was organized by the Innovation and New Markets team in collaboration with Operations Planning and HR at Transdev – part of the Rethmann Group and the second-largest rail and bus company in Germany. 19 students from over 13 countries worked together to develop practical solutions for optimizing school bus routes.  

The goal was to develop route planning that is cost-efficient, regulation-compliant, and reflective of real-world conditions. Using real data, creative ideas, and operational requirements, participants developed impressive prototypes, interactive tools, and smart timetables aimed at making school transportation more efficient and sustainable. 

The software solutions included interactive maps, optimization algorithms, KPI dashboards, budget and resource calculations, as well as live cloud-based demonstrations. Beyond the innovative outcomes, the hackathon offered ample opportunities for networking and exchanging ideas with industry professionals. Some students have already expressed interest in internships or thesis collaborations with Transdev. The winning team received a prize of €1,500. 

The hackathon vividly demonstrated how young talents, real-world data, and operational challenges can come together to create innovative mobility solutions.  

Transdev is a project partner of the European Research Center for Information Systems (ERCIS). Together, they have launched the Future Mobility Lab – a project that enables students, faculty, and practitioners to contribute to shaping the future of mobility.

As part of the first Brussels seminar, 17 Bachelor students had the opportunity to travel to the Belgian capital in mid-May and gain a direct insight into European tax policy. The programme included specialist presentations at the European Commission and a seminar at the North Rhine-Westphalian state representation. The Brussels Seminar is a programme offered by the Institute of Public Economics under the direction of Prof. Dr Johannes Becker.

Im Rahmen des ersten Brüssel-Seminars hatten 17 Bachelor-Studierende Mitte Mai die Gelegenheit, in die belgische Hauptstadt zu reisen und einen direkten Einblick in die europäische Steuerpolitik zu erhalten. Auf dem Programm standen Fachvorträge bei der Europäischen Kommission sowie ein Seminar in der Landesvertretung Nordrhein-Westfalens. Das Brüssel-Seminar ist ein Angebot des Instituts für Finanzwissenschaft unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Johannes Becker.

Weibliche Talente im Bereich Finance zusammenzubringen - das ist das Ziel des Women-in-Finance Events am 16. Juni 2025, das erstmals in Kooperation mit dem "Finest in Finance"-Programm durchgeführt wird. Das Event steht nicht nur Mitgliedern des Programms offen, sondern lädt ausdrücklich auch externe Interessentinnen im Bachelor und Masterein, die ein vertieftes Interesse am Finanzwesen haben. Sie erhalten die einzigartige Gelegenheit, sich mit anderen ambitionierten Studentinnen zu vernetzen, Einblicke in die Herausforderungen und Erfolge von Frauen in der Finanzbranche zu gewinnen und von inspirierenden weiblichen Vorbildern zu lernen.
